Don Golden Memorial Golf Classic

 

The First Annual Don Golden Memorial Golf Classic is scheduled for June 7, 2008 at the Georgia Club in Statham, GA (see www.thegeorgiaclub.com). This tournament is a tribute to Don Golden who was killed in a car accident, along with his wife, Debbie Golden, on October 23, 2005. He was a coach at high schools across North Georgia, he was an educator, a mentor, a friend, a brother, a son, and most importantly a father. All proceeds for the tournament will benefit the Don and Debbie Golden Scholarship Fund at the North Georgia Community Foundation.

Don was a graduate of Valdosta High School, where he was the star athlete on the National Championship football team. He lettered in four sports and still holds many records. He was inducted into the Valdosta Hall of Fame. He then went on to letter in baseball and football at the University Of Georgia, where he also holds records to this day. After graduating from the education program, he became a coach at Gainesville High School under coach Bobby Gruhn. After many years there, he went to Jackson County High School where he became the winningest head coach in the history of the school. After five years there, he moved on to North Hall High School for the next five years as head coach. North Forsyth was the last school lucky enough to have Coach Golden teach at their school. He was a dedicated teacher and not only wanted to teach kids the curriculum, but teach them life lessons that would make them better people. He cared about the future of our state and our country and knew that a solid education was the foundation for improvement. He will always be remembered fondly by the thousands of people that he came in contact with during his too-short time here on earth.

About the Scholarship: The Don and Debbie Golden Scholarship Fund of the North Georgia Community Foundation was created with our parents vision in mind: To continue educating the children of the future. This scholarship will be rewarded to a University of Georigia education student each year. The scholarship can be used towards their senior year or towards their graduate degree. We chose these standards because our parents graduated from the education program at UGA and continued to get their masters. They believed that the education of a child was the best start at a great life. We want the recipient of this scholarship to continue to strive for the students of Georgia to have the best teachers and the best education.
