53rd Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament benefiting Harwood Center
  Why play? This is why.
Please join us for the 53rd Annual Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament, presented by FedEx, benefiting Harwood Center on Friday, May 4, 2012 on the beautiful South Course at Colonial Country Club.
Shotgun start begins at one, with registration and lunch at at 11:00.
The Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament, the oldest charity golf tournament in Memphis, began with the idea that an average handicap golfer could help children with special needs. In 1959, a group of prominent Memphis businessmen and golfers turned their love of the game into a way to raise funds to support the children of Harwood Center. Spearheaded by Sam Cooper, Richard Harwood, Mark Vorder Bruegge, Don Drinkard, Richard Block and Herbert Lichterman, the event initially included a formal seated dinner following the event.
Founded in 1957, Harwood Center is a nonprofit agency that provides support and education for Mid-South families and children who have developmental disabilities. Since opening its doors, Harwood Center has helped more than 5,000 children with developmental disabilities get a better start in life. Harwood strongly depends on local support to operate our programs. Our funding is dependent on our partnerships with United Way , Les Passees, Baptist Memorial Health Care, as well as additional support from the East Memphis Civitan , Lichterman - Loewenberg Foundation, Valero Memphis Refinery , Children’s Foundation of Memphis, grants, contributions and agency fundraising efforts.
Our program consists of specialized education and therapeutic services for children age 18 months to 5 who are experiencing delays in their development or have a specific developmental disability. We provide specialty services for children who either have been diagnosed with Autism or are suspect of such. Services are offered at our four preschool locations, in the family’s home and in community settings. These services are delivered by highly qualified staff led by licensed special education teachers, board certified behavior analysts, therapists and psychologists. Our goal is to help children reach their full potential by learning functional skills to enhance their development. Ongoing training and support is provided to our families.
Because of Harwood’s four locations, we are able to serve children from all over Shelby & surrounding counties as well as children from Mississippi and Arkansas. Their families come from very diverse cultures not only from the mid-south but also from all over the world.
