The North Roseville Recreation Education & Creativity (R.E.C.) Center was founded in 1994. Built from the ground up by volunteer groups and funded by donations and grants. The R.E.C. Center opened its doors in October of 1999 to serve the neighborhood children of North Roseville. After a nine-month closure in 2006 due to major maintenance needs to the facility (still on-going), the Center reopened its doors on July 2007 and the Board of Directors shifted to restructure the Centers programs to focus on the families of our low income youth. This restructure took the past programs of helping at-risk youth to directly helping individual families of our at-risk youth we serve. The change in focus is due to the local economy downfall within the community, we are facing more unemployment which led to more hunger and homelessness and crises within the families of our youth.
The Center serves families in the neighborhood and is proud to sustain a healthy, stable environment that creates a positive impact on children's lives with programs that are free to all participants and enriches the quality of life in the North Roseville Neighborhood. Our priorities are nutritional meals, education and Life skill training, we believe in giving our youth chance’s to experience different opportunities that they would not otherwise have. We are currently operating solely on fundraisers, grants and donations and are so grateful for those who see the value in our unique program.

St. John’s Shelter Program for Women and Children is Sacramento’s only shelter which is exclusively dedicated to supporting homeless women with children. St. John’s strives to advance women from a point of crisis to a position of self-sufficiency in their lives. Since 1985, the program has provided a safe and supportive haven to more than 23,000 displaced homeless women and children.
Originating as an emergency shelter, St. John’s now offers a 90-day program to reintegrate homeless women with children into our community as self-sufficient and productive citizens. The program is rooted in one-on-one case management and provides comprehensive services to its residents. Residents develop a Progress Plan with weekly and monthly goals, as well as community service requirements. Residents are also required to attend weekly classes and workshops on topics such as job skills and training, parenting, fitness and nutrition, budgeting and financial management, basic computer skills, domestic violence counseling, mental health counseling, and drug and alcohol treatments programs. St. John’s also offers weekly health and wellness services from a registered nurse, art therapy and other self-development classes to its residents.
St. John’s recently started its After-Care Program, which was developed to assist women and children on their road to self-sufficiency after leaving the shelter and completing the 90-day program. The After-Care Program offers a continuation of training, classes, and counseling to help ensure that the program’s graduates successfully reintegrate into our community. Graduates receive continued job training and placement services, assistance in furnishing homes, transportation assistance, weekly calls from case managers, and the support of a wide network of successful alumnae.
