About Patuxent Greens Country Club
Stroll Among the Trees and Wildlife at Patuxent Greens Patuxent Greens Golf Club was originally built in the 1960s. More recently the club saw 1.5 million dollars for renovation in 2005. And now we've made a host of new changes designed to please you the golfer: New paths New golf carts New bunkers and tee boxes Fairway changes including new sod and removal of some trees Clubhouse remodeling Five new big-screen TVs in our bar and grill. As always, this is a tranquil and scenic course for a round of golf – a spot where you may see herons, deer, beavers and a bald eagle.
Most holes here are tight, tree-lined straight-aways or doglegs. Some holes have water that you don't see it until you get very close to it. But if you manage your shots, you can keep splashdowns to a minimum.
The rough can be treacherous at times; some greens are small and undulating. And don't be deceived by the moderate, easy-going terrain. “You can make birdies here, but you can just as easily make double bogeys,” says Greg Moore a Fore Golf general manager.
You'll start your round with a par-5 that can be reachable in two strokes for golfers who pick the right club and play their shots wisely. This double dogleg, wandering right then left, measures 457 yards from the back tees and 421 from the forward.
One of the tougher holes on the front nine is No. 4, an exciting par-3 that measures 191 yards from the tips and 158 from the front. “It has a large green with lots of undulations,” says Moore. “It's hard to play exactly the right club to be in the best spot for making par.”
One of the better risk-reward holes is the 6th, a reachable par-4 that plays at 324 yards from the back and 294 from the front. “It's a slight dogleg left,” says Moore. “You can get on the green in two, but you have to cut the corner by going over a patch of trees to the left. There are also trees and heavy rough on the right side from about 150 yards out to the green.”
On No. 9, you make your drive from a slightly elevated tee. This par-4 measures 398 yards from the back and 303 from the front. “Water lies up the left side and you need to shape your ball as you go along this dogleg right,” says Moore. “As you make your approach, you'll be hitting to an elevated green with bunkers right and left.” The real heart of this course, that will test your grit and your talent, starts at No. 13. It's a severe dogleg left that Moore says is one of the toughest holes. From the back it measures 398 yards and 295 from the front. “You have to shape your ball here to stay in the fairway, or you could end up in right hand rough or trees,” he says. “There's also water three-quarters of the down the fairway on the left hand side starting from the tees.” The par-4 17th (413 yards from the back, 368 from the front), is another toughie. “You need a dead-straight drive here because there's no place to miss with your ball,” Moore says. “You have to carry over a small pond from the tees and then there is out of bounds left and a pond to the right of the green.”
The watery 18th makes for an awesome and picturesque finish. This par-4 (349 yards from the back and 310 from the forward) allows you to hit driver off the tees between lines of trees. Your approach shot is to a peninsula green right next to the clubhouse. Do your best on this final hole; fellow golfers will be watching from a deck above in case you splashdown.
