City Mission 2008 Golf Outing

City Mission is located in the Brightmoor neighborhood of west Detroit. It is one of the neighborhoods the mayor has identified for improvement. But improvement of the neighborhood is not all that is needed. That is where City Mission steps in. In the Brightmoor community, over 80 percent of the children come from a fatherless home, with many living on public assistance. An unacceptably high percentage of students in elementary schools test well below grade level. With high levels of poverty, high school dropout and crime all around them, children here can easily become entrenched in a cycle of generational poverty, drug use and violence.75% of children are living in poverty. 78% of students drop out of high school. The average student is 18 months behind grade level. City Mission Academy is offering education and tutoring to attempt to break this chain of generational poverty and make a positive difference in Detroit. What happens in Detroit is not the fault of these young kids and this opportunity can help them to rise above it. Many of these kids will eventually become influential people in the city of Detroit and help to further propagate this change.
